Peter got his start in winemaking in 2001 at Stolpman Vineyards and was the Assistant Winemaker there until 2006. He is also one of the founding members of Piedrasassi and Holus Bolus wines. During this time he gained experience working with Syrah, Grenache, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Cabernet and Roussanne. After meeting Amy spitting wine over the winery drains in Lompoc in 2004, they founded Black Sheep Finds with the arrival of the 2005 vintage. Peter is in charge of winemaking for Black Sheep Finds and Holus Bolus, as well as managing and directly selling the wines in Central and Southern California. A Chicago native and hopeless Cubs fan, he has lived in California since 1992 when he attended the Claremont Colleges studying Fine Art and Environmental Studies.
Amy’s foray into the wine world began with a childhood dream to win an Oscar. While she waited for her golden statue, she worked as a sommelier at one of LA’s finest restaurants. This translated into a weekend jaunt to Santa Barbara where she met her future husband and fellow Black Sheep, Peter Hunken. A whirlwind romance involving a terrible, but cheap, apartment in Koreatown, countless hours of Ryan Adams and Damien Rice songs and bottles upon bottles of Muller Catoir Riesling turned serious. On a long hike in Santa Barbara in 2005, the idea of Black Sheep Finds was bantered about and just a few months later the first Syrah grapes for Hocus Pocus were being made into wine. Unlike the Oscar it all happened so fast. However, someone in the family must have a real job, so Amy works for a small boutique Burgundy and Bordeaux Importer and still ‘works the floor’ as a sommelier at that fateful LA restaurant. In her spare time Amy is studying for the title of Master of Wine, supports for her favorite charity, Kidsave, and enjoys writing about herself in the third person.
Bubbles began her love of all things vinous in 2008 when, at the ripe old age of 4, she joined the BSF team. Though not a big wine drinker (at her age one must watch one’s figure) she enjoys pawing dead winery mice, running after rabbits in the vineyard and, as a student of the Mr. Miyagi school of fly catching, chasing flies. Her strong points are: sitting, staring, walking and sleeping. Though her skill set is not exactly conducive to winery work (in addition to being a general liability and money grubber) the team affords her special consideration as she doesn’t have opposable thumbs or language and her short term memory is similar to that of a goldfish.
